Those Smart Vikings

Those that know me really well know that the history of nautical exploration is an interest/hobby of mine. (I have a lot of hobbies.) So I thought this bit of theory was cool.

Recent evidence supports a theory that Vikings used a natural birefringent crystal to find the location of the Sun when it was obscured behind a cloud, a critical navigational aid.

Cool.
